Áine's Memorial...
In Memory of Rare Breed CH Bobby's Girl (Áine) known and loved as Áine
Born in Mallow, Ireland, July 11th, 1995 - died April 27th, 2005 near Punky Doodles Corner, Canada
On Áine's last evening she came into the house with Pingin per routine to relax with Albrecht and I. Áine did not with glee run to find her favourite toy and then run round with enthusiasm, a characteristic that Áine had kept since she was a puppy. Nor did she with joy and loving exuberance jump up on Albrecht to playfully nip at his nose, which had become part of her evening ritual since her last litter of puppies. Rather, she jumped up on her favourite chair and seemed to be gazing somewhere beyond the room.
Canon Doherty once said in one of our many conversations that he had noticed that some dogs were almost human. He was making reference to Sam (Ch. Sheebhin Ard Na Coille), Áine's father. Ten years later, I understood what he meant by his comment, because Áine had been such a dog. She always had the uncanny ability to let you know just exactly what she wanted or was thinking. That night her far off gaze shared the horrible reality that she had begun a journey that she would take alone. We were not to know, that but twelve hours later, she would be gone and we would be left with a memory of a very loving and special little butterfly that had enriched our lives so much.
As a puppy, Áine attracted everyone's attention. She was small, feminine and with beautiful vibrant red markings accented by a pearly white background. She had a beautiful head and pretty face with piercing eyes. She oozed with expression and confidence and pure joy in living.
Under the kind and skilled hand of Tally Hill, Áine placed in Rare Breeds in l997. She was the first Canadian female Red and White to achieve her Rare Breed Championship. During her show career she won two 'Best in Show'. Áine was a graceful, beautiful, determined, daunting female in the show ring. No matter the challenge, Áine would perform the task required of her. At a show in Woodstock where it was very hot, Áine refused to miss a beat. Touched by her determination, we wrapped her in a blanket of ice to cool her. Refreshed, she went back into the ring with Tally at her side to win Best in Show.
Áine produced Pingin who before the breed was recognised by CKC in 2000 won a Rare Breed Best in Show at one year old and then went on to become number one Red and White in Canada and Best in Specialty in 2002. Séamus, from another of Áine's litters achieved a group 4th to complete the points for a championship and was number one Red and White in Canada in 2003. So Áine leaves an indelible mark in the history of Red and Whites in Canada. Áine was a foundation female for the breed in Canada. What her offspring did and are continuing to do is an embellishment of her. Her accomplishments in the annals of CKC cannot be changed and what is not yet written will in time be documented and added to the legacy she left the breed. She promoted the breed by attracting people by her beauty, her confidence and her joie de vivre. She was a pioneer and an advocate for the breed. Her passing must not go unnoticed for it is because of dogs like Áine that we have come to know and to love the breed.
As a mother Áine was kind, gentle and caring. She never stopped nurturing Pingin until the day she died. Pingin grieves her mother's passing; she still expects to find her waiting for her in the dog room. Pingin's expression of loss has magnified our grief. She has lost her beautiful mum and dad and we our loving Áine and Bran in such a short time.
Áine helped when Pingin felt so overwhelmed with her first litter of twelve. At times, I am certain that pups were not quite sure who was grandma and who was mom! Pingin learned from Áine and confidently took on mothering's finer skills. Would that she had also acquired Áine's fantastic obedience and attention attitudes so lauded by the late, great obedience expert Myrna.
Áine you were a tender, loving and caring pet. You were a loyal companion. You left so quickly that we had no opportunity to say goodbye. Maybe, just maybe, that is why now that whenever I see a butterfly in an unexpected place, like yesterday when one landed right in my path while Pingin and I were on our daily walk, (the one you used to walk with us) I thought of you. Your spirit lives on.
Our gratitude to Canon Doherty, Maureen Daly and John Gaine for the gift of our beautiful little girl from Ireland ten years ago. Thank you to Tally Hill and Christine Schira for handling Áine so beautifully in the show ring and for reciprocating her unconditional love.
We all mourn her passing but one day we shall play again in that great demesne on the other side of the rainbow bridge. Áine - thank you for the memories - sleep softly little princess! CODLADH SÁMH AINNIR ÁR N'AISLINGE.
