Lonan's Memorial...
In Memory of Craigrua Emerald October 20th, 1998 - May 5th, 2009
Lonan came to us from Ireland at about seven months old. He was a very shy puppy, so shy, that initially to move him from one location to another, I had to carry him. What were we do with such a shy Red and White?
After arriving back from Ireland with Lonan I contacted Anne Gormley asking her why she had approved a puppy such as Lonan for our breeding program. Her response was “I know his lines and I think that he will have much to offer your breeding program”. I can’t say that I was convinced but as he was with us there was no turning back. And, he was so beautiful; he kept his wonderful mahogany red and pure white his entire life. His coat was always straight, he required little to no grooming, just a bath once in a while. Though the most wonderful colour specimen I have ever seen, he was unfortunately so shy there was no point in showing him.
We left for a trip to Europe leaving our dogs with a friend of mine who owned a kennel – Country Paws. Well as luck would have it one of the girls came into heat unbeknownst to Glenda – Lonan our ten month old bred her and the rest is history. After getting past not being too perturbed about the situation, the pups were born and grew into lovely examples of Red and Whites. The pups all had wonder markings and colour and all had wonderful personalities. By this time we saw promising changes in Lonan – he grew ever so much more confidant and it was almost like he was attempting to jump out of his skin to be friendly. I was by this time confident that had we had Lonan from the beginning we would have seen a very assured boy.
Lonan, though he sadly never entered the show ring, fathered more than twenty champions, all owner handled and all new to the show ring. Of the champions he sired, Seamus was number one Red in White in Canada in 2003 completed his championship by attaining a group placement. He too has left his mark on the breed.
Lonan was the last of what we considered to be our foundation – Bran, Úna, Áine, Pingin and Lonan, the Aisling Cudo gang. By the time that he passed over the bridge he had long since lost his shyness.
People who visited would ask, “which one is the shy one”? Lonan always enjoyed visitors, particularly children; he knew that he would always get more attention from them. I am guessing, that it was partly due to Pingin’s influence, that Lonan learned that people were wonderful and that new experiences were fun. He followed her lead and learned. Just maybe, that is why Lonan did as he had always done and that was to follow her. He lived only 16 days without Pingin. Albrecht feels that from the moment that Pingin was gone, there was something awry with Lonan. Whatever toxin took our beautiful boy did so in less than twenty-four hours.
Lonan was named ‘the lonely one’. By the time of his passing he was neither alone nor lonely – he was no longer shy - impossible though it may seem! Our beautiful boy is gone, but his gentleness and his drive to become will always remain with us. His is a success story of the first order. We miss him terribly.
